Somojo magazine interviews Pixieguts http://www.somojomagazine.com Would you mind introducing yourself and telling us what instruments you play? I’m a vocalist in Australia making music with electronic producers around the world through file sharing over the internet. I produce, record, cut, and sample my own voice using Ableton Live, Sound Forge and Acid Pro software. How long has the current band line up been together? I make music with many different artists. The collaborations have been going on for around 18 months in some instances, as with Dementio13 (Wales), Dj Sid-The Apocalypze (USA), Titee (Australia), Adrian Carter (UK), E.I (UK), Crimson Death (Canada), Corrientes (USA). Other collaborations are more recent and have taken off quickly, like Baxandall IP (Poland) and Voide (Sweden). How did you get to meet each other? I’ve only met two of my collaborators in person - my partner Titee, an experimental artist who has his main web presence on the Jamendo site, and The Peach Tree, a Melbourne muso I first met on the internet and then had a cool time with for real on a recent visit to my old home town. In all other cases I have connected with collaborators in cyberspace and we have developed good internet friendships, along with interesting processes for music making at a distance – this just keeps getting better over time. Websites that have made these meetings possible include Last.fm, Pixies Palace (a network I started at Ning), EI Network, Ground Zero, Soundcloud and MySpace. What music did you listen to while growing up? Very eclectic! Old country, ballet music, Elvis, musicals, disco, pop on the radio, live indie rock in Melbourne, experimental, folk. Are you self taught or did you have lessons? I did about a year of classical voice training a long time ago, the rest is exploration. Did you always want to be in a band when you were growing up? I was more into dance and wanted to be an astronaut in my spare time - but from an early age people liked the sound of my voice and I liked singing! Do you record at a purpose built studio or do you record at home with portable digital equipment? I record in my study with a condenser mike and premixer straight onto Ableton Live. Some of the producers I work with have professional studio setups, some work basic with FLP Studio, hi-fi and low-fi make ace sounds. When’s the new album released, how long has it taken? The album just released at the start of April is called immaterial. It’s a selection of tracks produced since July 2008, so about 9 months in the making. Any new recordings planned? There’s music happening all the time. The most recent (finished last week) is a trip-hop track with Crimson Death – Aftershock. Who are the main song writers for the band? I come up with most of the lyrics but particularly love working with other people’s words. Lyrics collaborators include TRavvy, Titee, Nita Disaster and Adrian Carter. Some of the tracks have had lyrics by the producers themselves, some we’ve written together in the back and forth over the net. Do you write songs only about personal experiences? Everything comes from the heart and soul but I work in a mostly improvisational way at the time of recording and sing on the spot about anything that’s in my mind or that the music suggests to me personally. This leads to diverse themes and an impressionistic quality. For a long time I have been drawn to dreams and the unconscious in everyday life, this might be the most consistent lyric element in the tunes. Who are your favorite song writers? Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell are way up there. Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour? Anywhere, especially if I could meet some of my collaborators in person! How do you promote your music and get your music to new fans? The web, especially through Last.fm, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation, Jamendo, Ning networks, blogs, internet radio, podcasts – and I’m on Somojo. Do you think such sites are good for independent and unsigned artists? They have made a whole new world of music making and finding an audience possible, beware the addiction! Would you sign with a major record company? Only if they were very nice, lol. Some of the music is being distributed by netlabels: dPulse (USA/UK), Mystique Moon (Poland), Ground Zero Records (USA). Deep/progressive house music EP and tracks through Juno. How did you come up with name? There’s been comment in reviews about my artist name being bizarre – it’s a nickname a close friend gave me. I love the earth, like fantasy and I’m a sensitive mischievous creature with guts. What would you call your style of music? Eclectic vocal electronica. Trip house alternative. Top tags for the music at Last.fm: trip-hop, electro, house, trance, idm, dnb, house, techno, rave, experimental. Where can you see yourself in ten years? Making music more wondrous than now. What are your day jobs if you have one? I’ve been an artist of one kind or another all my life working part-time rent jobs– at the moment I type for a living. Review by Marvin at Free Albums Galore "Pixieguts is a bizarre name for someone with such a pretty and sensuous voice. The Australian vocalist specializes in cyber-collaborations with electronic artists throughout the world. The results are collected on three albums under her own name and a team effort album with Wales’ electronic sound artist Dementio13. All these albums explore various territories of trip-hop, drum & bass, IDM, trance, and pretty much anything else lurking in the electronic music scene. Pixieguts brings a lot of talent to these tracks but how she interacts these studio producers and remixers is the real treat. Her three online albums are titled Pixieguts!, Evolution, and Walking on Mercury. They all have interesting collaborations exhibiting a good amount of variety. The cast of collaborators is internationally diverse including Dementio13 (Wales), Crimson Death (Canada), Dj Sid-the Apocalypze (USA), Iannis Loumakis (Greece), Mario Dujic (Croatia), Metricks (Portugal), The Peach Tree (Australia), Phase Speed (New Zealand), DJ Brody (England), Baxandall IP (Poland) and others. Whether it is the techno rush of “Long River (Titee’s Remix)” from Pixieguts!, the haunting “Lullaby (with Dj Sid-the Apocalypze)” from Evolution or the rave beats of “Determination (with Electromagnetic Impulses)” from Walking on Mercury, something always interesting is going on. However my favorite tracks are the ones with Dementio13. Pixiegraf collects all the collaborations between Pixieguts and Dementio13. Most, if not all, of these can be found on the other three albums but it is nice to have them together in one place. Part trip-hop and part ambient with just the right amount of beats, Dementio13 delivers the perfect atmosphere to Pixieguts’ somewhat ethereal vocals as evidenced on such tracks as “Antartica”, “Currawong Rise”, and “Pacific Highway”. This is my favorite of the albums due to the strong interaction between the musicians and the unrelenting groove even on the quieter tracks. Start with this collection but if you like what you hear, check out the rest. REVIEW: NORTHCAPE AND PIXIEGUTS from Breakbeatpimp (Soundclick) "Pacific Highway is a top quality track in every sense. The production is crisp, clean and clear and this is as a professional sounding track as you are likely to find anywhere on Soundclick. Pacific Highway is a very soulful offering, smacking of the kind of bread and butter “Bristol Sound” trip hop that I listened to through the late 90’s. Pixiegut’s melancholy vocal is great, and the repeated line of “it’s still morning” fits the mood that Northcape sets out with his music as this is the kind of track that you need to listen to at 5am in the morning to feel its full force. I found that it is very easy to get lost in Pixieguts' voice and miss Northcape’s arrangement, which offers lush pads, rhodes, guitars and almost offbeat breaks. That isn’t a criticism… far from it in fact! To me that is a key indicator that the balance is just right – neither part over powers the other. That said, I feel that Northcape's track would stand on its own without the vocal – but the vocal becomes the icing on what is an already very tasty cake. I'm going back to listen again!" REVIEW: PIXIEGUTS VOCALS from Tony/Mind Productions (Atom Sounds) "The future is very bright here… Words eh? Why do some words sound like and describe what they actually mean? Words Like gash, cut, mutilate and hot. Thankfully the last word ..HOT.. describes to a tee the Vocalist that I have just discovered. I have heard many female vocalists over the years, some of which have been average, some good, but this lady is excellent. I just love flicking through OMD websites looking for something different. When I saw a link to an artist called Pixieguts, I thought Hmm I hope the word ‘Pixieguts’ is not one of those words mentioned above. The image the artist tag brings to my mind are poor little Pixies laid about with their insides out, get the picture? Yeah I am sure you do... Gladly the name does not describe the vocal talents this lady possesses. When I heard her voice my eyes widened, lips bowed downward and my head tilted slightly to the right. Yeah it was an acknowledgement of respect and talent to what I was listening to. The vocalist in question is Marie Craven (sounds so much better), otherwise known as PIXIEGUTS based in Queensland Australia. Her voice has a trained clarity about it that is very un-common for an independent artist. Ever listened to a singer and thought as your listening what did they say? Me too, Marie’s voice is perfectly clear with a clarity that puts her a cut above most you will hear. Clean, that’s best word to describe her voice. Unlike many other vocalists out there with a tone and clarity that can sound muddy. Looking at the amount of tracks this lady features on, I have the feeling that I am not the only person that has noticed. Marie has featured on many tracks, her voice suits some styles better than others. Each mix is ok, but some are better than others. Maries voice deserves a quality production and a solid structure to accompany it, anything less is a waste. Take for instance… Shot At Midnight By Pixieguts and Dementio13… I especially like this track, for two reasons. Firstly, the producer has allowed Marie to use her vocal range. Secondly I love the quality of music on display. The track is very dark, almost menacing with a ruff edge that’s like sand paper. I am not sure where the mix was mastered. Usually I have found the producer usually completes the final mastering. If I am right on this occasion, I think that the producer has a lot of respect for Marie. What makes you think that I hear you say? Well, he has not over imposed his music upon her vocals. If anything he has tilted the balance more in-favour of the vocals. This is more prevalent as the track opens, this is a great move! This is where the vocals are your focus, the music takes a back seat just to add atmosphere and body. This to me donates respect and it is abundantly clear. As the track unfolds a balance is struck between the two elements and a very strange almost odd, but excellent and cool sounding unity is established. The temptation for every producer when mixing vocals is just to take one shot stabs. Its easier to do mix vocals like that see, not so many key changes to make as the vocals shift from note to note. This is why I found this track odd in its sound. Both the vocals and music shift keys in different places also the vocals are an octave higher. This to me sounds so odd and yet so cool and fresh sounding. This indicates great musical nous and shows the ability to explore the boundaries. “Dementio13 is the producer and you will see a review of this artist here soon… Given Marie’s excellent voice and the right producer to support her. I feel that she really does have a fighting chance to break it into the mainstream. All it takes is to get the right hook, a catchy rhythm and a cool vibe, that’s it. Look at Dido for example she was around for years, then she was sampled on Marshal Mathers (Eminem) 'Stan'. That was it, BIG TIME. That’s all it takes, just keep on pushing Marie. PIXIEGUTS is a cut above the ‘good’ and is well worth your attention. Top quality vocals with deep and stylish music of the Electronic variety. Very highly recommended."
